Fellowship is the most prestigious grade of RSB membership

Fellows of the Royal Society of Biology have made a noticeable or significant contribution to the advancement of the biological sciences in a position of leadership.

Fellows benefit from increased professional recognition through FRSB post nominal letters and have the opportunity to get more involved in organisational-wide activity.

Joining is a straightforward, quick application process ahead of quarterly membership elections, and applicants do not need to nominated by RSB members.

Fellowship applications are welcomed from all areas of work. This could be in the practice and application of biological science; teaching biology and curriculum development; managing a team of professionally qualified biological scientists; or concerned with the senior management, direction or commercial activities of organisations in which the application, study, research or advancement of biological science is of major importance.

Applicants need to demonstrate that they have made a significant impact on the biosciences and require a minimum of five years’ leadership experience throughout their career.

Application process

To apply for Fellowship, you will need to provide:

  • An application statement – specific examples of your leadership experience in 750-words
  • A CV – a maximum of two pages
  • Publication list – an optional 200-word list of up to five significant publications

While Fellowship applicants do not need to be nominated, it may further support your application if you provide details of a maximum of two referees. This will ideally be someone who can vouch for your professional standing - they do not need to be an RSB member.

Applications will be reviewed against the above criteria by the membership team and Fellowship Committee, who will be looking for examples of the applicant’s impact on the biosciences. These will vary depending on the individual applicant, and their professional experience, but examples might include projects managed, budgetary responsibilities, funding received, line management experience, and strategic influence.

If you are unsure about your eligibility, send a copy of your CV to Karen Patel CBiol MRSB, head of membership, at and we will be pleased to advise you.
