Students develop their practical skills on the following areas:
• General lab skills: Laboratory Health and Safety including Risk Assessments and COSHH
• Pipetting, Molar equations, pH meters, Plate readers, Data analysis including standard curves, and maintaining good lab records.
• Students will use the skills they learned on day 1 to investigate the effect of toxic nanomaterials on lung macrophage cells.
• Learn the aseptic technique, working with E-coli and B-subtilis to explore antimicrobial agents, perform gram stains and investigate bacteria in environmental samples.
•    Hand on practical training on ELISA technique as a diagnostic assay to diagnose patients with an infectious disease.
On the last day of the course students will present one of their experiments to the rest of the group in a formal presentation session. The audience will be able to ask questions and provide an opportunity for students to show what they have learned during the course of the week.

The Laboratory Skills and Microbiology course is designed and delivered by real scientists to provide science students with an opportunity to gain hands on experience using real laboratory equipment. The course supports university and work experience applications, as almost all universities and employers now require previous laboratory experience before considering an applicant.
The course contents provide Undergraduate/postgraduate students who wish to freshen-up their skills and gain a better understanding of certain lab procedures before applying for further research studies or scientific posts. Attendees will gain valuable insights into the range of careers and laboratory research opportunities available. We have links with many companies that recruit researchers based on our recommendations. On completion of the course, the new skills developed by students throughout the course will be endorsed by our lecturers on LinkedIn and a reference can be provided upon request.

Attendance Requirements

No previous laboratory experience is required for this course as full introductions will be provided for each subject area.
