Regional Grant Scheme

Our Outreach and Engagement Grant Scheme will now open exclusively to applications for funding of up to £1,000 to run a citizen science project.

The grant application round for 2025 will open from 5 June - 6 July 2025.

What is the grant for?

Our citizen science grant scheme is open to members of the Royal Society of Biology who are members at the affiliate, associate (AMRSB), member (MRSB) or Fellowship FRSB) grades. If you are not yet a member, you can join now to be eligible to apply to our grant scheme.

Teachers who are members of the Royal Society of Biology can apply for a grant to engage your school’s or college’s students, and your wider local community and community groups.

Whether you are interested in aphids, yew trees, or any species across the alphabet; whether you want to find out the answers to specific questions, to learn more about local ecology, or the local impact of climate change or sustainability… If you can work out how you can turn your science question into a simple study that anyone can take part in, to help you collect the data you need to answer your science question — about species sightings, animal behaviour or plant growth rates for example — this grant is for you.

Think about:

  • A specific question your survey or citizen science project will seek to answer.
  • How you will recruit people to take part in your project? This could be working in and with schools across your region or with local community groups. Decide what will work best where you live.
  • Plan how you want to collect your data.
  • Plan how you will process that data.
  • Think about how you can communicate your final findings at the end of your survey, study or project, and how to share your findings with the people who will contribute data, sightings, or work to your survey or study.

To apply:

Tell us all your ideas by sending in your application to our grant scheme via our online application page. Your planned citizen science surveys, events or activities need to take place from 7 October 2025 - 30 September 2026 to be eligible for a grant from this grant scheme.

A link will appear on this webpage when the grant scheme opens on 5 June.
