Biology Education Research Group (BERG)
The Biology Education Research Group (BERG) was formed in 2010 with the aim of bringing together those with a strong interest and expertise in the field of education research in the biosciences. The BERG membership comprises of academics working in university education departments from across the UK, biology educators in schools and colleges, and representatives from other organisations with an interest in furthering biology education research.
BERG became a special interest group of the Royal Society of Biology in June 2014 and is involved in:
- developing projects which bridge the transition from research into policy or practice
- promoting and furthering biology-based education research in the UK and overseas
- contributing to the Society’s journal, the Journal of Biological Education (JBE)
- informing the Society’s education and education policy activities, by providing guidance and evidence
- supporting the Society to grow its evidence-base on relevant educational issues
- lobbying on current biology education research issues
The current co-chairs of BERG are Dr Caroline Smith and Ms Francesca Gale MRSB.
