An introduction to using Team-Based Learning for interdisciplinary teaching
In this interactive workshop, attendees will have the chance to become familiar with using Team-Based Learning. This active learning method, teaches students the importance of accountability for self and team based activities and the link to employment.
What will the course cover?
- An overview of active learning
- An introduction to the stages of Team-Based Learning (iRAt, tRAT and application exercises, peer review)
- Participation in an example of a Team-Based Learning activity
- Information on how to get started with introducing Team-Based Learning
- Discussion on how to create a working group for designing and moderating Team-Based Learning teaching materials
The course will be run in an interactive style, where participation of course attendees will be expected.
Who is the course for?
This course is suitable for educators from any discipline, who are interested in learning new methods of engaging students in the class room with the aim of fostering active engagement, accountability and interdisciplinary learning in a diverse team. No previous experience with using Team-Based Learning is required.
Nicky Milner is a senior lecturer in medical science at the Faculty of Health, Education, Medicine and Social Care at Anglia Ruskin University in Chelmsford. She is passionate about active learning and building motivation and confidence in students. Her research is based on the use of active learning pedagogies for improving retention and engagement in students, particularly foundation year students. She is keen to promote the use of Team-Based Learning and to create a working group for designing and moderating shared learning materials for use in the biological sciences.
