Join the branch for their AGM followed by guided walk round the beautiful Wandlebury Country Park.
The East Anglia branch invites those within the region to attend and participate in the AGM for 2019. The meeting will be held in the delightful setting of the Education Centre (Stable Rooms) in Wandlebury Country Park and refreshments will be available. The AGM will be followed by a guided walk around the estate.
On the guided walk we will explore some of the eight miles of waymarked trails. You will see the herd of Highland Cows are natural lawnmowers that help to keep the meadows in good condition for flowers and wildlife. From the Ely Viewpoint it is possible to see 17 miles to Ely Cathedral on a clear day.
The main buildings at Wandlebury are from the 18th century. The cupola clock-tower is a distinctive backdrop for the former walled garden.
You will see the mounting blocks that were used to mount the horses that were once stabled at Wandlebury. Wandlebury was once a famous stables, with the King's race horses. The most famous horse was the Godolphin Arabian. He never ran a race but he is one of the three horses from which all today's thoroughbreds descend from. He is buried at Wandlebury.
Wandlebury was also once a thriving Iron-Age Hillfort. You will see the main outer ditch of the fort, which runs in a complete circle with a footpath in the bottom of the ditch.
The Park offers an amazing display of wild-flowers with carpets of cow parsley and yellow buttercups. poppies and other arable flowers at different times of year. For bird watchers on the walk - look out for green and great spotted woodpeckers, jay, bullfinch, long-tailed tit and sparrowhawk! Overall, something for everyone!
All are welcome to attend the AGM, but only members of the RSB may vote. The AGM will be an opportunity to review the year's events, the use of branch funds and to allow discussion on future plans and direction of the branch. All committee roles, including those of the principal officers, will be reviewed to ensure that branch members remain happy with their roles.
