The Company of Biologists is running a workshop exploring the causes, consequences, and dynamics of cell size
This workshop will take place from Sunday 13th to Wednesday 16th July 2025.
Cell size is a fundamental aspect of biology that influences function, yet its variations and consequences remain poorly understood. This workshop seeks to create a new synthesis by integrating biophysics, evolutionary biology, and ecological modelling to better understand the dynamics of cell size.
Participants will explore how changes in cell size, driven by environmental shifts such as global warming, impact biological function and ecosystem services. By bringing together experts from diverse fields, this workshop aims to establish cross-disciplinary collaborations and outline the future empirical and theoretical work needed to tackle this critical issue.
Topics covered include:
- Theoretical and empirical approaches to cell size
- Biophysics and cell function
- Evolutionary and ecological modelling of size-function relationships
- Impacts of environmental changes on cell size and ecosystem services

event page.
Audience:
Early-career researchers (ECRs) interested in cell size, particularly those studying unicellular organisms, are encouraged to apply.
Applications:
10 funded places are offered to early-career researchers (PhD, postdocs and PPIs for the first three years of their appointment) to attend the workshops along with the 20 invited speakers.
Applications, including a CV and a letter of support, are due by Friday 10th January 2025.
Additional opportunities for ECRs include:
- Blogging for community sites
- Presenting short talks and summaries
- Proposing future directions and collaborations
- Creating videos on their workshop experience
