Diversifying the Curriculum in the Biosciences - HUBS Learning & Teaching Workshop Series 2025

This HUBS-funded workshop from Kingston University and University of Liverpool will be taking place in-person and virtually on Friday 30 May 2025.

In these financially constrained and turbulent times, academic staff in UKHEIs are still faced with the “problem” of how best they can meaningfully and purposefully engage their increasingly diverse students. In a teaching context it is well rehearsed that what lecturers do in their classes is far less important than what students do in the class (Halpern and Hankel, 2003).  Despite this pedagogical truth however, it is also widely held that teaching should be of personal interest to, and solicit the engagement of, the diverse student body.  So how are we to teach in a way that engages with the life experiences, talents and interests of the wide diversity of students that we may have in front of us? More importantly, in these politically contested times for HE as well as in our wider society, how can we, given our possibly very different life experiences and backgrounds, teach in a way that doesn't exclude, isolate or make feel vulnerable any individual in our own learning settings?

If you seek knowledge, tips and techniques to help you update, refresh and adapt your teaching to our prevailing contexts in the Biosciences then this conference is for you. A number of eminent speakers, expert in their areas, have taken the time and trouble to develop their practices in this area and are willing to share their emotional and cognitive efforts with you for the potential benefit of your own teaching practice and your students' learning.

Organised by teams from Kingston University and the University of Liverpool a panel of speakers has been hand-picked to introduce and expand upon policies, procedures and strategies they have successfully employed to develop truly inclusive learning environments. If you want to develop your skills in this area, then please don't hesitate to sign up. We very much look forward to seeing you at Kingston at the end of May.

The workshop programme is available for download.
