The Society of Biology is delighted that three Fellows have been recognised in the Queen’s birthday honours list. They are:

  • Professor Colin Blakemore KBE
  • Professor Julia Fitzpatrick OBE
  • Dr Andrew Treharne MBE

Dr Mark Downs FSB, chief executive of the Society of Biology, says: "Once again, our Fellows are being recognised for their significant achievements through thier services to public engagement, policy and research. This honours list reveals the diverse ways in which scientists are contributing to society. The Society offers its sincere congratulations to these Fellows."

Dr Andy Treharne FSB is Chair of UK Biology Competitions, a special interest group of the Society of Biology. Rachel Lambert-Forsyth, director of education at the Society of Biology, says: “The British Biology Olympiad and Biology Challenge play an extremely important role in engaging, inspiring and challenging school students with biology and stimulating their curiosity in the natural world. Dr Treharne is instrumental in leading the competitions which are very much appreciated by participants and their teachers. We are extremely grateful for his ongoing support.”

Dr Treharne says: "I was stunned when I opened the letter from the Cabinet Office last month; it's not something I ever expected and I feel incredibly honoured to be given such recognition. I'm also very grateful to the rest of the hard-working volunteers who run the British Biology Olympiad and Biology Challenge."

Professor Colin Blakemore Hon FSB is former president of the British Biology Olympiad and has shown personal bravery over many years in communication on the use of animals in research. His work on vision has added greatly to knowledge in this area of neuroscience and to the public awareness of its importance.

Professor Julie Fitzpatrick FSB is the Scientific Director of the Moredun Research Institute and Chief Executive of the Moredun Foundation. She also holds a Chair in Food Security in the College of Medical, Veterinary and Life Sciences at the University of Glasgow. Professor Fitzpatrick's research interests focus on livestock health and disease in the UK and in developing countries. Her OBE is awarded for services to Animal Health and Science.

In addition, an OBE was awarded to Sharmila Nebhrajani, chief executive of the Association of Medical Research Charities (one of the Society’s Member Organisations), for her services to medical research.
